At times I have thrived on change and at other times I have struggled mightily against it and clung to shreds of old views and habits that had long outlived their use. I used to think that I just had to get "there", just had to get "it" to get finally started with life. Of course there was always another "there" to go to and another "it" to get. Now I think I understand that this "struggle" is my life. And it is meant to be enjoyed. If you find yourself in the stormy seas of change, or yearn for a richer, deeper life:
- Realize you have the power to change. Remember that you are constantly choosing your own life, whether you stay where you are or whether you move into new realms. We can not know the future, but we are constantly writing the story of our own lives.
- Create a vision for your life.Where do you want to be? What would you like to do? Who would you like to be? Who would you like to be with? In your mind paint a very clear picture of the life you want. What would you attempt, if you couldn't fail? What would you do, if you weren't afraid of failing? Write it down.
- Make a plan and take the first step. Which parts of your vision can you bring into your life right now? What do you still need to bring your life closer to your vision? Who are your allies in your quest? Who can help? Right now it is more important to get into action than to find the perfect place to start. There will be plenty of time later to adjust your plan. Get out there, talk to friends and make your move.
- Commit to your plan for the long term. Don't attempt a radical remodeling of your life on the first try. This isn't about not failing. It is about failing consciously. Note what you did and how it felt. Remember, learn from it, and go back to do it again. Most important of all, smile. It's your life. It's meant to be enjoyed.
